Ventilated, former moderator of
Facepunch and 100% gold member was part of a comic group called Dem Kom(m)ix Squad, which started about two years ago.
Its goal was to break free of the cliche kind of comics normally that were normally filling the comics section of Facepunch. It was also a statement that was successful in getting many people to change their style of comic making.
"mm3guy" from Facepunch has set up an interview with him, check it out below:
mm3guy: Thanks for being here with us today! Could you tell me a little about yourself?
ventilated: Well I work with audio almost full time, and don't make comics as often as some of these dudes on Facepunch, although mine are of a MUCH HIGHER QUALITY than theirs. I take classes for a few hours a day, and then have 3 day weekends every weekend, gives me a lot of time to think up ideas. I've got a ton (although many don't make it to fruition)
mm3guy: With all these ideas, how did you choose which ones to make first?
ventilated: Well with my most recent comic "addicts anonymous," it was really because I was thinking abotu Chuck Pahliniuk books and how all of them somehow relate to an anonymous group-therapy kind of thing. Mostly "Choke," how they're all sexual deviants but all have their individual problems. I had an idea to do one, but was always too lazy to pose that many characters (most of my comics have maybe 4-5 characters total). I got really jived up about the idea, and was just like "this is right, it's a good time to make this comic"
mm3guy: Tell me a little about that comic group you and a few other people formed a while back
ventilated: Back in March 2007, drive_the_hive posted something about setting most of the comic makers on Facepunch right (since they were all doing the same comic with very slight twists). We started producing very very low quality comics under the group pseudonym "Dem Kom(m)ix Squat" (the second M is optional depending on global location). It was really a gold member prank, but I think that I'm the only one that kept making comics. I know I'll ocassionally see a comic in DKS vein, but it's nothing on par with things like "Party at Eli's House" or some of the other comics by the elusive DKS group. We were all banned for 30 days or so for trolling the comics forum and using gimmick accounts (we weren't trolling at first, but some people went hay-wire and things got out of hand)
mm3guy: Are there still people around that have a strong dislike for DKS?
ventilated: Most of the people who HATED DKS now go along with what we (I) do. The two strongest names I can think of in the "anti-dks" rally were -Ben_Wolfe- (something like that on Facepunch), and Combine_Dumb. A few DKS members semi-attacked -Ben_Wolfe- but not really, they just remade one of his comics and made him seem pretty dumb (never a personal attack on him). Combine_Dumb because I found an "incriminating photo of him and his unibrow" somewhere on the forums, and used it in most of my comics up until sometime in 2008 (I think). Not many people "HATE" us now, they turned their hate towards other comic groups that make legitimately ****ty comics. Groups like "The good word" that arose a few months after DKS hit the ground, people didn't like that. I actually saw a "Good Word" comic the other day (a new one), it was god-awful. No plot line even (was just twist after twist, didn't have enough to connect it to everything)
mm3guy: Is there still an underground Gold Member comic network, or has that idea passed on?
ventilated: I can't disclose any information on that topic. All I can say is: keep your eyes peeled, something may pop up (you'll probably feel it in the seat of your pants)
mm3guy: Ha ha, alright! Well, is there anything else you'd like to add before this interview is wrapped up?
ventilated: Um... Hm.... Uh... Be careful who asks to be your sponsor, they may want something from you that you don't want to give ;)
mm3guy: That's interesting advice. Well, thanks for being here today!
ventilated: Yo, peace out dawg!
