As you all know the new Zombie First Person Shooter Left 4 Dead was released on Nov. 18, and this has raised many questions regarding complete content in Garry's Mod.

First and foremost, Garry is still deciding how he's going to upgrade the Engine. The problem is that every time he upgrades the engine, the requirements to play also raise. This means for you people who are still on integrated Chipsets or other older hardware may be setback if the Engine is upgraded. Not to worry, as this hasn't been set in stone yet, Garry is still debating what he's going to do about this.

It is planned to get complete Left 4 Dead support in Garry's Mod soon, this means models and props seen throughout the game will be spawnable in Garry's Mod. However; this brings back up the Engine upgrade, as many of the models use different shaders than the Source Version being used now. So, what happens? At the moment Garry has brainstormed a few solutions which I will post below from his blog.

Moving to the l4d engine I’m thinking probably wouldn’t be a good idea. I don’t know for sure, but I’m kind of assuming that the l4d engine isn’t the source engine. What I mean by that is, it would be like using the Dark Messiah or Postal 2 engine. They’ve drifted away from the main Source Engine trunk. But I guess Valve are going to merge all the good **** from the l4d engine to the main Source Engine.. so maybe the next Engine update for GMod will be the one that ep3 is on.

I’m not sure that would be the case in a change to the new engine.. but if it is then yeah, definitively upgrading. If not then I need to balance the demand for an upgrade with the amount of people that are under that requirement, and would lose access to GMod completely.

Another option would be to stick with the current engine and try to import the l4d content into it. This however would likely result in it all looking like **** due to shader differences. Plus, GMod would have stopped evolving.. and I don’t really want that to happen.

The final option would be to split GMod in two. One version would be the current version, and one on the new engine. I really don’t want to do that, because it’s short sighted and stupid.

There's still a lot of work to be done for this upgrade, so everyone keep your fingers crossed.[...]
