Far from everyone who plays Garry's Mod actually browses Facepunch, but I'm pretty sure most players watch this site. Therefore I'm going to discuss some awesome looking work in progress gamemodes in this article, which you might want to keep an eye on. Let's start with Resident Evil.
Resident Evil
Since most of you are gamers, you probably know what the Resident Evil series is about. For those who aren't too familiar, here's the basic idea, taken from the Wikipedia description of the first Resident Evil:
The player takes control of a member of a special law-enforcement task force who find themselves trapped in a mysterious mansion located in the middle of the woods populated by numerous strange mutated creatures who are threatening their survival. The objective of the game is to uncover the mysteries of mansion and ultimately escape while trying to survive.
Do remember that the goal of this gamemode is not to reincarnate the series. It's loosely based on it. So, basically a zombie survival gamemode. Haven't we had that numerous times before? This gamemode however, does not only consist of shooting zombies in the face.
The gameplay is divided into three different stages. The first stage is called preparation mode. In this mode players can buy items and upgrades for their weapons, explore the map without any intervention of zombies, place barricades and/or explosive barrels and prepare for battle. The second stage is the action stage and that's where the zombies come into action. Every minute the zombies become stronger and the loot they drop less useful. As you get hit, you don't only lose health, but you also have a chance of becoming infected. When your state of infection reaches 100% you die regardless of your health. To get rid of your infection, you need to find a cure item. After that the end mode starts in which players will be able to vote for the next map and optionally for a different difficulty.
There's four properties for each weapon which are upgradable:
Fire power
Accuracy
Clip size
Firing speed
The amount of money you get after each round to pay for these upgrades depends on the both the amount of zombies you killed ($1 per zombie) and the amount of time you survive. As an extra motivation to not quit while playing; you don't get any money if you don't finish the round.
The HUD is completely custom and tells you everything you need to know. Here's what it looks like:

Unlike conventional HUD health bars like the default one in Garry's Mod, you can't see how much % health you have left. Instead of that, the bar at the top indicates your current health and severity of infection:

So far, 2 gamemodes are done and 3 are planned, including VIP, Survivor and Team Survival. For your safety, CS:S weapons and custom weapons will be featured. Here's a video of the VIP gamemode:

Sunrise
The gamemode Sunrise is about traveling in space and gathering resources for new upgrades, better armor for your ship and much more. You can fight with other players or just roleplay with them. The author states three ways to be a good pilot:
Be social pilot and talk to all players around you in space and peacefully mine in areas where people can't hurt you.
Be a neutral pilot flying around and mine without any friends. Pretty much someone who doesn't give a **** about other people and neither do they about him.
Be aggressive and fighting with other players for loot.
The gamemode will feature a clan system, ship upgrades, trading, a space station, NPC pirates and awesome looking custom effects. Player owned stations are also planned. The gamemode is pretty similar to the idea of EVE Online. Here's the official trailer teaser:

GMod Tower Defense
Those who have played or watched the development of Team Fortress 2 Tower Defense know how tower defense works. Basically, it's a real time strategy game in which you build certain towers around a maze to protect villains from invading your castle.
Not much is known yet about this gamemode, but thomasfn has stated that the gamemode will be based on a lobby system like TF2TD and Sassilization. However, there are already some promising development screenshots:
Being developed by a team including the person who wrote PCMod, I'm confident this is going to turn out well. The team is still deciding whether the enemies will invade along a fixed path or in an open area, so visit the thread to let them know what you'd like to see.

Star Wars Online
Last, but not least, a new gamemode set in the Star Wars universe (No pun intended). According to the developer the gamemode is going to redefine the standard for Star Wars mods forever. Sounds promising, so let's delve into the details!
The gamemode takes place during the so-called Galactic Civil War (GCW) around the time of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Its intended to not only become a mod, but a community as well, therefore the development will take place in stages.
In the first stage the idea of the gamemode will be discussed, in the second stage scripting will take place and the community decides which planned features make it and which don't, in the third stage the mode will be beta tested and in the final stage the gamemode will be ready for release. However, that's not where it ends. The goal is to allow the community to keep adding new quests and other new stuff to the gamemode. As we speak, the development has reached stage 2, so when you're done reading, you can post your own ideas in the thread!
When you start playing, you get too make a choice out of the following ten classes:
Marksman - Specialize in snipers or ranged armory.
Brawler - The up close in your face guy.
Medic - Someone in need of health or buffs? You will be called!
Creature Handeler - Want to tame a rancor to do your bidding?
Bounty Hunter - Hunt the scum of the galaxy.
Commando - Need some thermal detonators? A base busted? You found the right guy.
Pistoleer - Specializes in pistols.
Smuggler - Smuggles spices and contraband to sell on the black market.
Squad Leader - Leads troops in battle.
Tera Kasi Artist - Specializes in hand to hand combat. Attuned with the force slightly, these guys make for a good ally and a deadly foe.
It will be possible to become a Jedi, but it's not going to be easy. First, you will have to do specific quests, then you have to finish the Jedi training, then you undergo the Padawan trials and then you will be a real Jedi.
Quests can be started by either talking to NPCs or mission terminals. There will also be faction specific quests given to you by faction terminals. PvP can happen at any time, so you always need to be cautious in what you're doing. That means you can attack freely and there's no limit to it. You can decide whether you want to play in first-person view or third-person view yourself. There will also be so-called PvE possibilities, for example raiding the death star and taking down Darth Vader. Obviously those are not going to be easy.
Let's end with and intro video and demonstration video:
