Das Bo Schitt is a Garry's Mod movie maker that first started out with his Gmod Idiot Box series, but has since skyrocketed in his popularity.
Community member mm3guy has interviewed him check it out below:
mm3guy: Hey! Thanks for being here today! So to start this thing off, can you tell me a little about yourself?
Das Bo Schitt: Well, I'm the guy responsible for the damage of our young people through Garry's Mod ... when of course, I'm not working my night shift here in Washington state
mm3guy: Haha, so what first made you explore Garry's Mod film making?
Das Bo Schitt: Well I'd been playing Garry's Mod for about a year prior to discovering people actually made Gmod films on YouTube. My favorite of course, being The Idiots of Garry's Mod by DJY1991. Originally I planned to make a sort of "fan video" that was exactly like it, but then as it became closer to actually happening, I realized the "bat**** random" jokes I had lined up just weren't funny in the least. That's when I decided to just make my own Gmod series, but was still pretty set on making it skit based. The difference was that the skits were going to be a bit more structured, some even telling a short story
mm3guy: How long did it take for you to make the first episode, from planning to the final rendering in your video editor?
Das Bo Schitt: I want to say it probably took about two months to do the first episode because there was lots of learning involved, stuff like using Sony Vegas 9 for the first time, what to do and what not to do if it's going up on YouTube, screwing up and re-filming a few things and finally, figuring out the right render with little to no knowlege of what YouTube won't destroy in a video
mm3guy: Did you anticipate the kind of popularity your first video got?
Das Bo Schitt: I like to think after the two months of effort I put into it and the help my three other friends gave me, I had a pretty good idea that it was going to be good enough to get recognition for a second episode
mm3guy: How much does fan response to your videos affect how you're going to do the next video?
Das Bo Schitt: Fan response is apprieciated and I like to think it keeps the series from "jumping the shark" as it were. Idiot Box 5 had a lot of longer skits and after seeing that people weren't quite into that sort of thing, I put up a poll on the blog asking if the majority of fans liked the short skits or the longer ones. The fans have spoken in favor of the shorter ones, so expect the 6th episode to be similar to the first episode, with sort of a mix, the majority of course, being the short skits
mm3guy: How has game developer reaction been to your videos?
Das Bo Schitt: Half way through the making of Idiot Box 5, I was contacted by Carlos Bordeu of the Ace Development Team who made Zeno Clash. He told me much of the development team were fans of the series and offered me a free product key for Zeno Clash. After playing the game for all of 20 minutes, I had a skit idea all lined up and ready to be put in the video. That was a fine day indeed
mm3guy: One of your other more popular videos is your Billy Mays vs. Vince video, what was it like making a video of a slightly different format than the Idiot Box (but still random)?
Das Bo Schitt: I had a lot of ideas already lined up for the video, the difficult part was choreographing a fight to last throughout the song I chose for the fight but still be entirely enteraining the whole way through
mm3guy: Do you have any plans to make another non-Idiot Box video?
Das Bo Schitt: I'm planning on making another Gmod Arena, the two combatants this time being Jack Thompson VS Uwe Boll. Instead of using look-alikes, I got the help of DM-Gaina to make custom ragdoll skins of both fighters
mm3guy: So, besides your own, what machinimas out there are your favorite?
Das Bo Schitt: I've enjoyed much work from Fancy Pants and DJY1991, The Gman Squad is a favorite and even though the Halo series irritates the crap out of me, I can't help but enjoy Arby N' the Chief
mm3guy: Have you ever toyed with the idea of making a machinima in another game?
Das Bo Schitt: Garry's Mod is so incredibly versatile that it's really hard for me to think I can achieve the same level of comedy, action or drama on anything else that's limited to me selecting a playermodel and using pre-set animations and head bobbing. Short answer: not really.
mm3guy: Is there anything you'd like to say before this interview wraps up?
Das Bo Schitt: Yeah, I wanted to give thanks to DJY1991 and the ICTON crew for inspiration and exposure as well as the guys at garrysmod.com for the very same thing. I want to thank the fans for informing me of stolen reposts of my videos, spreading the word of my videos and of course, making my Gmod movies the way they are today. The guys at the ACE team, thanks for making the models available for Gmod and of course, Garry for making this excellent mod in the first place.
