I get a lot of tech support emails every day, they can be broken down into these categories:
80%: hl2.exe crashes on the startup screen - on the picture of GMan with a cone on his head
19%: hl2.exe crashes when I shoot an NPC1%: I've got myself into a mess by installing mods/addons.
The hl2.exe crashes all seem to come from laptops with dx9 cards which are being quite cheeky by calling themselves dx9 cards. This problem can be fixed by doing one of the following:
Updating your video card drivers (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6416-EYDH-0477#video).Adding "-dxlevel 80" to the command line. ( To do this, right click Garry's Mod in steam and go to Properties. In the window that pops up click the "Set Launch Options" button at the bottom. Now in that box, type "-dxlevel 80" exactly as shown (without the quotes) )
If you have installed too many mods or addons and you're getting a lot of errors or weird behaviour when you're trying to play, you can revert GMod to 'factory settings' by cleaning it up (http://wiki.garrysmod.com/wiki/?title=Cleaning_GMod).[...]
